Deeply Track Your Numbers

Deep tracking involves establishing systems that track the actions and results that lie under and create global numbers in your organization.  Put your organization on a path to exceptional success by tracking the right numbers. Report them in a timely fashion, respond quickly and coach people to help them work smarter.  

As your organization’s leader, you track key financial numbers. You also need to track numbers supporting the organization’s mission and vision. But, look deeper into the numbers, especially for those related to your leadership role.

Begin by asking these questions:

  1. What critical numbers create these global figures? Look for short-term results within the organization that directly link to key organizational results.
  2. What are the critical numbers underlying these metrics? Bore deeper to find numbers occurring monthly, weekly, even daily, that lead to the ultimate results.
  3. What contribution do I make through my decisions and actions? Consider key decisions you make and the plans you champion. Select the 3-5 most critical actions and craftspecific, measurable, accountable, realistic, time-bound, expected results,(S.M.A.R.T.E.R.) goals. For each goal, create your success plan including measurable milestones along the path. Determine actions you will take every week and make appointments with yourself to complete them.

For other key deep numbers, ask:

  1. Who executes the functions that create these numbers? Help each person discover what they contribute to the organization’s mission and vision. Coach them to identify their most critical numbers and create S.M.A.R.T.E.R. goals, success plans, and actions.
  2. How can we most effectively and efficiently collect, store, report, display and celebrate all these numbers? Establish systems to make it easy for everyone to see their success frequently.
  3. To whom should numbers be reported and how often? The action taker is the first person to receive numbers. Their coach, team members and the organization follow.
  4. When and how should success be celebrated? Encourage the celebration of individual and team accomplishments. Ensure that success is seen as more than accomplishing a specific goal. Progress is the basis of success, even if the goal is not fully achieved. Falling short of challenging goals creates greater success than having no goals or plans. Help individuals to acknowledge their need for coaching.  Encourage leaders to use techniques from Results-Centred Leadership to coach for even greater success. 

When they see how they contribute to your organization’s mission and vision by working and tracking a few key numbers, everyone on every team throughout the organization works smarter.Your organization treads a path of ever-increasing, exceptional success.
