Growth or Decay

True or False? We grow until we reach a stable plateau, and then we either grow again or decay?

The answer is false.

In today’s world, when we reach a plateau we are not reaching stability, we are starting to decay. A plant starts to die the minute it stops growing. In business it is the same: there is no stability.

As a leader, if you want to achieve enhanced results, it is imperative that you continue to grow and that you ensure your team also continues in their growth. Growth can be technical learning; the development of leadership skills such as effective delegation, enhanced coaching, improved listening skills, better organization, and increased personal productivity. It may also be personal enhancement such as increased health and wellbeing.

To help you keep growing, determine where you want to be in three years and what you need to do to get there. Map out a program of continuous development. Life is a journey and not a destination, so shake off the complacency and get going. If you kayak in white water and stop paddling you risk tipping; most assuredly you risk not moving in the direction you want to go. Start paddling! Continue to grow and get the enhanced results you desire.

Once you have determined where you want to be, set out your desire in the form of a SMART (Specific, Measurable, Agreed Upon, Realistic with a Target Date) goal. Then ask two most important questions: “What might get in the way of achieving my desired goal?” and “What am I going to do about the potential obstacles?”

Continual growth takes effort and strong desire. You must value the goal highly if it is to motivate you to take the required action. Recently a relative who is over 70 and usually very physically active, spent two weeks in hospital with pneumonia. Lack of exercise resulted in his muscles beginning to atrophy. In just two inactive weeks, decay had set in. However, through diligence and hard work, he was able to regain his former muscle tone. He was able to grow.

Continue on your growth journey. Choose one thing today that will make a difference to your success, health, and happiness. Choose to grow.
