Strengthen Your Business by Design

The book Disciplined Dreaming by Josh Linker is a great reminder of how important it is to continually challenge your vision. Linker suggests that in today’s competitive environment if you are not tinkering with your business strategy weekly, sooner or later one of your competitors will start to tinker with you.

Your competitors may not be plotting to take business from you, but if you are not actively expanding your creative vision you could wake up one morning and find that someone else has implemented your dream.

Consider Uber. Look at what thinking like a designer did to the taxi industry!

Uber took the industry by surprise.

Complacency is not an option – environments change. New businesses open daily, and more individuals exit the corporate world seeking a better work/life balance.

How do you begin a process that enables you to look into the future? You might hire innovative and inventive people who can help you look at things in new ways. Consider observing what people do to move beyond the constraints of traditional thinking. Hire a coach to assist you in brainstorming.

As part of the process consider what others tell us they need or want, and start observing what they are doing and how it is accomplished. You might be quite surprised by how large the gap is between what they say and what they are actually doing.

Many of us are too focused on the present, but visionary leaders embrace the mystery of the future to enable them to foresee needs. They live by the credo: Yesterday is history, tomorrow a mystery, and today is a gift, which is why it is called the present. The challenge to all leaders is to take advantage of this great gift. Start crafting tomorrow’s needs by stepping out of your current beliefs and “lead by design.”

  • What will you start doing differently tomorrow? And how do you propose to keep score?
  • Are you capable of being a disruptive force of change in order to be the best you and your employees can be?
  • Can you or your employees do one thing differently that would drive the business results to a new level over the next 6 to 12 months?

Are you prepared to be the master of your destiny?
